2 Days Congo Gorilla Tour

The Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo was created in 1925. The park borders with the Rwenzori Mountains in the north east and partly lies in the Semliki Valley. It’s geographical area covers 8,090 Sq. Km (3,120 Sq. Mi.). The park prides in some of the active volcanoes including Nyamuragira and Mount Nyiragongo. The two mountains are responsible for the diverse habitats and wildlife. More than 300 faunal species including Common Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), red-tailed monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius), Central African red colobus (Procolobus foai) Eastern gorilla (gorilla beringei) and golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti), mountain gorillas (G.b. beringei)etc. are found in this park.

Brief Itinerary

  • Day 01: Transfer from Kigali to Goma
  • Day 02: Gorilla tracking in Virunga and returning to Rwanda.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to DR Congo / Goma

Begin with a city tour of Kigali by visiting Gisozi Genocide Memorial Site and later transfer to Goma through Musanze. This journey will take approximately 4 hours. On arrival, proceed to Rumangabo. Stay close the park at the luxurious Mikeno Lodge or Kibumba Tented Camp.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking

For better gorilla trekking opportunities in Virunga national park, June and September or Mid-December and Mid-February to dodge the tropical rains. Usually it takes 1 to 2 hours to encounter the gorillas. The chances of seeing gorillas in this park are far greater than in any other park in the region.

In the peak season a gorilla permit costs USD 400; and in the low season it costs USD 200. While tracking, observe the gorilla trekking rules.

After the trek, return to Kigali.
