Kibale Forest National park is a primate capital and a first stop Centre for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. The tropical rainforest is home to the highest population of chimpanzees along with other 12 primates. 2 shifts of chimpanzee trekking (morning at 8:00 am and afternoon at 2:00 pm) are arranged to give a high population of visitors chance to trek the endangered chimpanzees. Uganda Wildlife Authority increased gorilla permit prices from $ 600 to $700 starting with 1st July 2020.

Reasons for the increase of chimpanzee permit costs?
Well, the major reason behind the increase of chimpanzee permit costs in Kibale forest national park is to promote the conservation of endangered chimpanzees for sustainable tourism. Chimpanzees are listed among the endangered species which if not handled with care can get extinct denying the future generation a chance to meet their lost cousins.
Also, the cost of the increase of chimpanzee permits in Kibale Forest is to limit the number of travelers visiting these apes. Chimpanzees share 99.9% of human genes hence our closest relatives are susceptible to human diseases. Tourist crowds in Kibale forest park disrupt the peace of chimpanzees and some of their social behaviors such as mating among others.
More still, increased chimpanzee permit costs is meant to support the livelihoods of local communities adjacent to Kibale Forest National park. Some percentage of the money collected from the sale of chimpanzee permits is given back to local people to improve their standards of living.
What about the already booked permits
All permits booked before 1st July 2020 cost $150 each. Even those beyond 2020 but were booked before the announcement of the new prices will cost the initial price ($150). Uganda wildlife Authority will check out its system to confirm before giving you permits at $150 with no difficulty.
