Gorilla Safaris in Volcanoes National Park
When preparing for gorilla trekking in Rwanda to Volcanoes national park it’s very important to book your gorilla permit in advance months before the actual date of the Trip. We have compiled a list of the habituated gorilla families in Rwanda’ Volcanoes national park plus each family characteristics. There are 56 gorilla permits available for sale every day. This number varies only when some of these gorilla groups cross over to the Virungas in DR Congo.
Susa Group/ Family: Comprising of 41 members, Susa group is the largest gorilla family. It consists of 3 silver-backs, several black backs, females and youngsters. The 5 year old twins, Byishimo and Impano exhibiting their antics, make this group a dream for every visitor to Volcanoes. This family roams the slopes of Karisimbi Volcano (4507M).
Sabyinyo Group: With 8 Sabinyo gorilla family led by the most gigantic silverback in the Volcanoes national park called Guhonda, is normally the most accessible of all members.
Amahoro Gorilla Family :- This family is made of of 17 members under the leadership of the peaceful Ubumwe. Amahoro is a more strenuous to access compared to Group 13 or Sabyinyo.
Kwitonda Gorilla group: This family migrated from DR Congo and is comprised of 18 members under the leadership of Kwitonda silverback – which is translated as “the most humble one”. The group consists of 2 silverbacks and one black back. The group inhabits the Virunga section of the park. Tracking this group is as difficult as Susa.
Group 13 ( Agashya) consists of 25 members. It was named Agashya sine at the time of habituation, there were only 13 members but have now grown to 25 members.
Umubano Gorilla Family: Consists of 11 members. Umubano split from Amahoro group after the dominant silverback was wrestled down by Charles, the present leading silverback of Umubano.
Hirwa Gorilla Family was formed by members from Group 13 and Sabinyo.
Detailed Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Rwanda
Airport pick-up from Kigali international airport. Overnight stay atThe Manor Hotel, Kigali
Day 2: Kigali City tour
After breakfast, visit the Gisozi Genocide Memorial Ground, the handicrafts shops, the museum, and many other fascinating places in Kigali. In the afternoon transfer to Ruhengeri for an overnight stay at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge / Kinigi Guest House.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes national park
After breakfast, our tour guide will lead you to the park headquarters for briefing from the head of the park rangers. At 8.30 am local time, commence the memorable gorilla tracking experience. You will be left in the presence of the awesome mountain gorillas for about an hour. Take photographs and enjoys the antics of baby gorillas as they swing from tree branch to another. Gorilla trekking is the best wildlife experience in Africa.
Return to the lodge for your transfer to Kigali airport. Depart –

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge provides good value, spectacular views of the volcanoes and easy access to Volcanoes National Park (PNV).
Set on the slopes of Mt. Sabyinyo, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has 30 individual stone cottages. The cottages provide both space and privacy. Each has a small lounge with a fireplace to ward off the chill at this altitude, a private verandah and en suite facilities with a shower. The furnishings are simple and comfortable, with queen-size beds and individual safe. A generator provides hot water and electricity, usually from about 18h00; but the lodge expects to be connected to mains electricity in the near future
