The forest park is divided into four sectors namely Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors in the southern region. Uganda Wildlife Authority has habituated 20 gorilla families to ease gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National park.
Gorilla groups in Bwindi Forest include Mubare, Rushegura, Habinyanja, Nkuringo, Katwe, Christmas, Bweza, Oruzogo, Mukiza, Kutu, Muyambi, Bitukura, Kyaguliro, Nshongi, Busingye, Musinguzi and Rwigi. The high number of gorilla families guarantee availability of gorilla permits which give many travelers a chance to trek these endangered primates. You require a valid gorilla permit to be able to trek gorillas in Uganda. Each Uganda gorilla permit costs $700 for foreign non residents, $600 for foreign residents and UGX 250,000 for East African citizens.
In addition to gorillas, Bwindi forest shelters other wild animals such as chimpanzees, African buffalos, Forest Elephants and Colobus monkeys among others. You may encounter any of these animals during your trek to see gorillas
The park is also home to over 350 bird species 14 of which are not found anywhere else in the whole country. If you are a birder, expect to see some notable birds in Bwindi such as African Green Pigeon, African Harrier Hawk, Cinammon Chested bee eater, Crowned Hornbill, Giant Kingfisher, African Broadbill, Ruwenzori Apalis, Black faced warbler, Mountain masked apalis and Black billed turaco among others.
Bird watching, nature walking and community tours to Batwa and Bakiga pygmies are a not if you have extended time in Bwindi Forest National Park.

After an early breakfast, the driver guide from Africa Adventure Safaris will pick you from your hotel in Kabale and drive to the respective park headquarters. The drive time is roughly 4 hours to join a pre gorilla trekking briefing. In your group of eight, you will be assigned a gorilla family to trek. At 8:00am, the armed park ranger will guide you into the forest to search for the endangered gorillas .
Trekking time can take between 30 minutes to over 7 hours depending on where gorillas will be located that day. On meeting gorillas, you will spend an hour in the company, have fun and embrace their human-like social behaviors. Hike back, meet your driver-guide and transfer back to Kabale for an overnight stay.

This drive covers roughly 117 kilometers on the bumpy maram road via local communities and gardens. Buhoma region is one of the popular gorilla regions in Bwindi Forest. Driving time ranges between 3 to 4 hours. The region is famous for sheltering Mubare which is the oldest gorilla group in Bwindi Forest National park. Other gorilla groups in Buhoma include Rushegura, Mishaya, Katwe and Habinyanja gorilla families.
This drive is the easiest lasting for roughly 3 hours. The 4×4 wheel drive helps you marvel through the bumpy and sometimes muddy slippery roads of Ruhija. Gorilla families in Ruhija region include Oruzogo, Bitukura, Mukiza and Kyaguliro families
The drive from Katuna/Gatuna border to Nkuringo ector covers roughly 106 kilometers lasting for between 3 to 4 hours. The road is so bumpy and muddy in rainy season which make the drive strenuous but worth it. Nkuringo is home to Nkuringo and christmas gorilla families
This is the longest drive! Rushaga sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National park. The drive time can take up to 5 hours via local communities, farms and towns. Rushaga shelters the highest number of gorilla families in Bwindi Forest. These are Mishaya, Bweza, Nshongi, Kahungye and Mishaya. Rushaga is also a centre for gorilla habituation experience where you spend 4 hours with gorillas at @$1500
