Bwindi Lodge is a luxury forest lodge located near Buhoma UWA park headquarters in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The lodge sits on a hill overlooking the Munyanga River and Bwindi forest. Bwindi lodge is part of a collection of eco-luxury lodges owned and operated by Volcanoes safaris.
Accommodation, facilities and rooms at Bwindi Lodge
Bwindi Lodge features a collection of 10 luxury bandas and suites. Among these include 8 stand rooms where 6 are doubles and 2 are twins. They all have a spectacular view of the forest. The bandas are constructed using natural materials such as wood, stone and locally sourced fabrics. The rooms are designed with large windows and private verandas that overlook the forest. Room amenities include ensuite bathrooms, hot and cold running water, complimentary toiletries, sitting and relation area, tea and coffee making facilities, charging facilities for electronic devices among others.
Beyond the rooms, guests have access to a range of facilities designed to enhance their stay. These include a main lounge with forest views, a restaurant and bar, complimentary Wi-Fi in designated areas, laundry services, concierge assistance, airport transfer arrangements, trekking preparation services and a gift shop featuring locally made crafts. Breakfast is usually served early to accommodate guests preparing for gorilla trekking. The meal typically includes fresh fruits, cereals, pastries, eggs cooked to order, tea, coffee and fruit juices. For guests departing early, arrangements can be made to ensure they have a substantial meal before heading into the forest. Lunch may be enjoyed at the lodge or packed for guests participating in longer excursions. Packed lunches are commonly provided for gorilla trekkers and often include sandwiches, fruits, snacks and refreshments. Guests dining at the lodge can expect salads, grilled dishes, soups and seasonal ingredients.
Dinner is generally a multi-course meal featuring a selection of meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options. Activities offered by the lodge
Gorilla trekking and habituation
Mountain gorilla trekking is the primary activity for most guests staying at Bwindi Lodge. The activity begins with a briefing at the Buhoma park headquarters where visitors are assigned a habituated gorilla family and receive guidelines for the trek. Guests are accompanied by UWA rangers and trackers through the forest in search of mountain gorillas. The duration of the trek varies depending on the location of the gorilla family and can range from 1 to 7 hours. Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed one hour to observe them in their natural habitat. During this time, guests can watch the gorillas feed, interact, groom one another and care for their young. For visitors seeking a more in-depth encounter, the Gorilla Habituation Experience offers the opportunity to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family. Unlike standard trekking, this activity involves accompanying researchers, conservationists and trackers as they continue the process of familiarizing gorillas with human presence. This experience is available only in the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors of Bwindi.
Guided forest walks
Guided forest walks allow guests to explore Bwindi forest beyond gorilla trekking. Guests are accompanied by guides and follow established trails through the forest. This offers the opportunity to guests to learn about the park’s ecology, plant species, medicinal herbs, insects and smaller mammals. Along the way you may spot L’Hoest’s monkey, blue monkey, red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus, olive baboons, yellow-backed duiker, black-fronted duiker, rare golden cat, Bush pigs, giant forest hog, Side-striped jackals, African golden cats, African civets and Otters.
Bird watching
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park hosts more than 350 bird species including a number of Albertine Rift endemics. Birding excursions are conducted with guides who help the guests to identify species by sight and sound. Some of the birds that can be spotted include African green broadbill, Shelley’s crimsonwing, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, Great Blue Turaco, Handsome Francolin, Bar-tailed Trogon, Regal Sunbird, black bee-eater and many other forest birds.
Batwa cultural experiences
The Batwa people were among the original inhabitants of the Bwindi forest before the area became a protected national park. Cultural experiences with the Batwa introduce visitors to their traditional way of life including hunting techniques, medicinal plant knowledge, storytelling, music, dance and survival skills.
Waterfall walks
Waterfall walks take guests along forest trails leading to waterfalls hidden within Bwindi. These hikes combine nature exploration with opportunities to observe birds, butterflies, primates and plant species. The waterfalls themselves provide excellent photography opportunities and a chance to experience the quieter sections of the rainforest
Coffee tours
Bwindi lodge also offers coffee tours. Guests visit local farms where they learn about coffee cultivation from planting and harvesting through to drying, roasting, grinding and brewing. The experience provides insight into the role coffee plays in local livelihoods while allowing visitors to sample freshly prepared Ugandan coffee.

Guests can take a chartered flight from Entebbe International Airport to Kihihi Airstrip. Upon arrival, a road transfer of approximately one hour takes visitors to the lodge near Buhoma park headquarters. - By Road
Travelers may also drive from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey typically takes between 8 and 10 hours depending on road conditions and stopovers. Many visitors combine the road transfer with visits to other national parks such as Lake Mburo National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.
