The 5 Days Mount Nyiragongo hiking and Rwanda gorilla trekking safari is an adventure experience worth doing. Enjoy a hike to the summit of Nyiragongo, an active volcano located in the heart of Virunga National park. The summit of Nyiragongo shelters the world’s largest lava lake with boiling lava. The active stratovolcano stands at 3,470 meters above the sea level and a 3 Days package is best to conquer this active volcano.
Nyiragongo is one of the 8 volcanoes in the Virunga Conservation Area. The other volcanoes include Nyamuragira (active), Mikeno, Bisoke,Karisimbi, Gahinga, Sabyinyo and Muhabura volcanoes shared between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Virunga National park is also home to the endangered mountain gorillas.
There are roughly 250 gorillas which have been habituated into 8 families i.e Mapuwa, Lulengo, Kabirizi, Munyanga, Nyakamwe, Bageni, Rugendo and Humba gorilla families. In most cases, travelers to Congo choose to combine gorillas and mount nyiragongo climbing to make a complete package. You will also relax on the shores of Lake Kivu in the borders of Rwanda and Congo.

Day 1: Transfer to Lake Kivu
Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali for a transfer to Gisenyi – Lake Kivu. If you have time, you can have a boat cruise to the Nyamirundi coffee island to learn how the coffee is grown, harvested, processed and consumed in the cup. Dinner and overnight at Dinner and overnight at Paradise Malahide/Kivu Serena Hotel.
Day 2: Transfer to Congo for Hiking Mount Nyiragongo
Today you will wake up very early for a quick cup of coffee and your guide will transfer you to Rwanda – Congo border at Goma and there transfer to Kibatsi village – the beginning of Nyiragongo hike. Hiking to the Nyiragongo summit usually lasts 4 – 6 hours depending on the general group fitness. When hiking, you don’t leave anyone behind! Dinner and overnight at the top shelters.
Day 3: Descend the Volcano and transfer to Volcanoes national park
Early morning, you will begin the descent of the volcano, where your guide will drive you back to Goma by midday. You will then cross over back to Rwanda and drive back to volcanoes national park.
Day 4: Gorilla trekking
Enjoy your breakfast and head to the park headquarters with packed lunch to be briefed about the dos and don’ts while with the gorillas then proceed to track the gorillas.
Dinner and overnight stay at Muhabura Guest House (Budget) / Hotel La Palme (Deluxe) / Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (Luxury).
Day 5: Visit Dian Fossey Tombs OR Golden monkey tracking
