Spread on 331 square kilometers, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National park is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural centre (UNESCO) site sheltering the highest population of mountain gorillas. There are over 450 mountain gorillas in Bwindi Forest which make half of the world’s total gorilla population.
Bwindi forest National park is bisected into four regions which are Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the southern region. Mountain gorillas live together in 21 gorilla families scattered in the four gorilla regions. Besides Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the other population of mountain gorillas live in the Virunga Conservation Area shared between Mgahinga, Volcanoes and Virunga National Parks.
The 3 Days Uganda gorilla tour will give you chance to trek one of the 21 gorilla families in this jungle.
You will be allowed to spend an hour in the company of the gorillas to learn their behaviours, take pictures and enjoy their company. Gorilla groups in Bwindi Forest are Kutu, Bweza, Busingye, Oruzogo, Kyaguliro, Kahungye, Katwe, Christmas, Mishaya, Rwigi, Mubare, Rushegura, Nshongi, Nkuringo and Habinyanja gorilla family among others. Mishaya and Busingye gorilla families are still undergoing habituation experience in Rushaga sector.
In addition to gorillas, Bwindi Forest is an important birding area sheltering over 350 bird species 14 of which are not found anywhere else in the whole of Uganda while 123 bird species in Bwindi Forest are endemic to the Albertine rift valley. Birders in Bwindi forest are assured of seeing some notable bird species such as African Green Pigeon, Crowned Hornbill, African Harrier Hawk, Giant Kingfisher, Cinnamon Chested bee eater, Black bee eater, Black billed turaco, Ruwenzori apalis, neumann;s warbler and mountain masked apalis among others.
The 3 Days adventure also involves visiting the batwa pygmies, the traditional dwellers of Bwindi and Mgahinga forests. The trip starts and ends in Kampala.
Brief Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali city to Bwindi – Uganda
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will find the driver guide from Africa Adventure Safaris waiting for you. Meet, greet and have a brief tour through Kigali City. Some of the places to visit include Kigali genocide memorial centre, Kimironko market and Presidential palace among others. Have lunch and thereafter drive to Bwindi Forest connecting to Rushaga sector in the southern region of Bwindi Forest.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & community tour
After an early morning breakfast transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing on the rules and regulations of gorilla trekking. Together with seven other travelers, you will be allocated a gorilla family to trek. The actual hike starts at 8:00am lasting for between 2 to 7 hours depending on your hiking speed and the location of the gorillas. You will be allowed to stay with gorillas for an hour as you take photos and enjoy their company. In the evening, you will visit batwa communities to learn their traditions, norma and customs. You will also be entertained in traditional dances and songs.
Day 3: Transfer to Kampala. End safari!
Have a relaxed morning breakfast, check out and setoff headed to Kampala to catch up with your connecting flight at Entebbe International airport.
