Are you planning a Rwanda safari? This land of a thousand hills offers you all to meet and exceed your travel expectations. Rwanda is a landlocked country located in East Africa which was in 1994 negatively affected by the genocide that claimed the lives of innocent people and wildlife. The major national parks became battlegrounds and bases and even after the genocide, some land from the national parks was allocated to the people who had been displaced and those who had been in exile. Today, Rwanda under the leadership of Paul Kagame has strived from genocide ashes to be ranked as a leading tourism destination in Africa. The diverse wildlife, beautiful landscapes, hospitable people, lakes and rivers make a complete safari package. The top tourist attractions in Rwanda include among others:
The Primates
There are a number of primates in Rwanda however the most outstanding ones are mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. Mountain gorillas live in the forested Virunga volcanoes (volcanoes national park) in northwestern Rwanda. They are some of the greatly endangered primate species with only 900 of them remaining on earth. In volcanoes national park, there are 10 habituated mountain gorilla families they are trekked by tourist’s daily. However important to note is that only 8 tourists are allowed to trek one mountain gorilla family that they only spend with an hour. This means that only 80 mountain gorilla trekking permits are available a day and therefore if one is interested in this great experience he should endeavor to get a permit on time. Mountain gorilla trekking permits are only sold at $750 and can be got from the Rwanda Development Board or through a trusted tour operator such as Africa Adventure Safaris, the leading travel agency
The chimpanzees, on the other hand, live in Nyungwe forest national park located in the southwestern part of Rwanda. Just like trekking mountain gorillas, chimpanzees can be viewed after hikes through Nyungwe forest one of the densest forests on the African continent. Tracking chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest are very exciting because the forest alone is a natural wonder and most tourists before heading there for tracking are always curious and ready to explore its mysteries. Chimpanzees are among human beings closest wild animal species and wildlife safari wonders that tourists to Rwanda must not miss out.
The Natural Forests
Rwanda’s natural forests are yet other wonders worth exploring while on a wildlife safari in the country. Covering several land areas, Rwanda’s natural forests act as homes to a number of wildlife species especially birds, primates as well as a number of mammals. The most known forest in Rwanda is Nyungwe forest that stretches in the southwestern part of the country with a number of trees and other vegetation species. Other natural forests in Rwanda include the Gishwati Mukura forest and the forests that cover the Virunga volcanoes (mount Karisimbi, Bisoke and Sabyinyo) located in the northwestern part of Rwanda.
The Lakes
Rwanda also has a number of lakes including the famous methane lake Kivu that stretches along the western part of Rwanda. Other lakes in Rwanda include lake Muhazi located in the eastern part of Rwanda, lake Ihema also located in the east, lake Mugesera located in the southeastern part, lake Ruhondo located in the northern part among others. Among all the lakes, its only lake Kivu and lake Ihema that are known to many people and most visited by tourists. Other lakes are great tourist destinations that can be visited by tourists on wildlife safaris as they can get chance to view a number of wildlife species around this lake. Tourists going for boat trips on locally made dugout canoes can best experience the wonders of these lakes.
