Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is carried out in Volcanoes national park and the gorilla permits reservations are managed by the Rwanda Development Board. Gorilla permits are ever on high demand throughout the year just because of the stiff completion and as a result, they get fully booked with payments on first come first serve basis. Therefore advised to book gorilla permits in advance in order to avoid disappointments.

Booking Gorilla permits through a tour and travel agent

Most tourists who organize gorilla safaris to East Africa (Rwanda) book their permits through tour companies and all of them say that reserving gorilla permits through a local tour agent in Rwanda is simple, saves time and less tiresome than booking permits directly through the Rwanda Development Board.
Tour operators tend to make the process faster thereby getting a gorilla permit confirmed in a short period of time than the booking it direct from the Rwanda Development Board. Below is the process on how to book the gorilla permits through a tour agent.

  1. Contact us; prior to making a gorilla permit booking, you’re supposed to let us know about your travel dates in which you want to have a safari to Rwanda with the Exact dates you may want to track the gorillas.
  2. After getting informed about your travel dates, we let you know about the availability of gorilla permits on those particular dates and then request you to make a deposit on the safari cost so that we secure the gorilla permits.
  3. The deposit is made on the bank details provided to you and payments may either be done through a Bank wire transfer or Charging a credit card. Both methods of payments take 3-4 days for the money to reach our account.
  4. Once the money reaches our account or is processed, we shall notify you acknowledging receipt of the money. In case you pay by credit card, there is 5% bank charges, and in case you pay by bank wire transfer, there are USD30-40 bank charges.
  5. You also need to send us your passport details (Name, Number, and nationality) which are needed to be printed on the gorilla permit.

All it takes to habituate Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

Mountain gorilla habituation is about training wild gorillas to make them used with human presence. This process can take up to 2 years. A tracker explains: “A group of wild gorillas is assigned to us and we set out every day come rain or sunshine to follow them. When we find “our” gorillas, we spend the day sitting in the forest, making claiming vocalization or even pretend to be eating leaves to show them that we are not a threat. After a few months, gorillas still remain hidden in the bushes but they will curiously peep through in the vegetation at us. For many months all we see is the hands and faces of curious gorilla poking through the bush. It can also be hard to know the size of the group or composition!. When the silverback feels comfortable about our presence, he leads the rest of the group to feed in the open, still keeping a distance. Eventually, we can approach as close as 15 ft (5m) from the gorillas without them running off. We then gradually allow tourist to see the gorillas. We continue to monitor our group every day.  Since we have lost their fear of humans, we are now responsible for protecting them! The whole process is long and grueling – it demands dedication and love for the gentle giants.”

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The Bwindi national park covers an area of 321sq km and is located in Southwestern Uganda on the edge, of the Western Rift Valley. It is located in both Kabale and Rukungiri district, northwest of Kisoro and Kabale. Bwindi is regarded as true rainforest which spreads over a series of steep ridges and valleys that form the eastern edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. The Average annual rainfall in Bwindi is of almost 1,500mm, and it’s the vital catchment area, the source of five major rivers, which flow into the Lake Albert. The forest floor is damp and laden with leaf mold, matted vegetation, and fallen vines, which serve to trip you up as you clamber up and down the slippery slopes in search of a glimpse of the elusive gorillas. The park supports great biodiversity. While most of today’s forests are no more than 12,000 years old, Bwindi’s vegetation has been weaving itself into tangles over at least 25,000 years, in the process accumulating a lengthy species list. The park protects over 310 species of butterfly, 51 reptiles, 200 trees, 88 months and an exceptional 120 types of mammal including 10 primates. Primates in this park include chimpanzee, L’Hoest’s, red-tailed and blue monkey, black and white colobus, baboon, and Bwindi’s most famous resident, the mountain gorilla. Bwindi can be cold especially in the morning and at night. The annual average temperature range is 7°C – 20°C with the coldest period being June and July. On your uganda safaris, warm clothing is required, plus wet weather gear since Bwindi receives up to 2390mm of rain/ year. This is concentrated during two wet seasons, short rains in March-May and heavy rains in September-November.
Uganda gorilla trekking
There are 15 Gorilla groups of families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with one reserved for research purposes.

There are 5 groups in Buhoma with Mbare being the first Gorilla family to be available for Gorilla Tracking in April 1993 and started with 12 members and 1 silverback. But shrunk in number and currently have 7 members and one silverback

The Habinyanja group was first visited by tourists in 1999. The name comes from “Nyanja” which is the local word for ‘body of water’. It refers to the swamp in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest where the group was first sighted. Habinyanja is a fascinating family with a lot of drama and commotion. This is caused by the power struggles between the dominant silverbacks and fights for family leadership. The adult females are led by the shrewd alpha female called Kisho

The Rushegura gorilla family was brought together in 2002 after one of the Silverbacks from the Habinyanja group decided to break away. They started with 12 individuals including 5 females. This “Habinyanya 2 group” quickly received a new name, that derives from “Ebishegura” – a tree species that was abundant in the home area of the new family. The Rushegura group is a calm family. In the past, they used to cross the border to neighboring DRC every now and then but always returned to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. They are usually not far from Buhoma Village and sometimes even wander through the gardens of the lodges.

In Ruhija we also have 4 families of which one is allocated for research and that is Kyaguriro
Bwindi Forest National Park
The Bitukura group was named after a river where the family members were first sighted. The habituation that started in July 2007 was a relatively easy process as the gorillas were already frequently encountered by the UWA rangers. Although the habituation process normally takes a minimum of two years, this group could already be visited by tourists within 15 months after the start. Bitukura is a peaceful family including 4 silverbacks and some playful juveniles. They share a close bond and often have ‘group meetings’ or get-togethers

Oruzogo gorilla group is located in Ruhija together with Bitukura, and Kyaguriro which is the gorilla family dedicated purely for research. This gorilla family can trek from Buhoma or Ruhija. You can thus book your accommodation in Buhoma or Ruhija Area. One will need to drive for one to two hours from Buhoma to reach the starting point. Oruzogo gorilla family was availed for trekking is 2012 and Tibirikwata the dominant Silverback made sure his family is viable and a formidable force in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest ahead of the approaching season when hundreds of human friends flock to southwestern Uganda to meet their closest cousins.

Kyaguriro group is located in Ruhija side of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. This gorilla family is put aside for research to study more about mountain gorilla behaviors, habituation and how to conserve these great Apes only found in Bwindi and the Virunga Ranges. The Kyaguriro group was habituated in 1999 as a group dedicated to research. By closely keeping contact with this group a lot has been learnt about the mountain gorillas of Bwindi. Previously it was believed that the mountain gorillas in Bwindi forest are similar to those of the Virungas, but it has been observed that there are differences between the two types of mountain gorillas. For example, it seems that the blackbacks in the Virungas mature into silverbacks much earlier than the ones in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

The southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has got five Gorilla tracking Groups with the new formed group known as Busingye,

The Nkuringo group was named after the Rukiga word for “round hill” and was launched in 2004. One of the most important reasons for their habituation were the problems they created for the local communities by destroying crops and other products. By opening up the gorilla family for visitors, the community could directly benefit from tourism and it formed a protection for the gorillas as well. The family was led by the silverback Nkuringo who died in 2008, leaving behind 2 silverbacks in the group. In November 2008, the Nkuringo family expanded thanks to the special birth of a twin – Katungi and Muhozi – though Katungi, unfortunately, died at the age of 1.5 years.

Bwindi Forest National parkNshongi is the largest group ever habituated and was officially launched in September 2009. It was named after the river Nshongi, close to the place where the gorilla family was first seen. Although most gorilla families usually consist of 25 members with one or two silverbacks, this family is a rare exemption. Another remarkable fact is that the group is led by Nshongi, who is not even the oldest silverback in the family.

Mishaya Group of gorillas is located in Rushaga southern region of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park together with Nshongyi, Kahungye, and Busingye. Mishaya is a silverback in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda, who left Nshongi group in Bwindi with a few females to start his own group. He was able to gather a few other females from the other groups in the area, reaching a total of a group size of 12 gorillas including three infants. Mishaya, the only adult male in the group by the time of separation, is reported to be a fighter who often starts interactions with other groups.

Kahungye is one of the gorilla Families found in the southern sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Together with Mishaya, Nshongyi, and Busingye, they can trek in Rushaga. Kahungye and Oruzogo gorilla groups were presented for gorilla trekking in 2011 after passing the mock examination. In not more than a year, this group managed to split giving birth to a new gorilla family called Busingye which means peace.

Busingye gorilla group is the newest family to break away from Kahungye which was opened for trekking in 2011. It was suspected that at one time Kahungye would split as it had three silverbacks and a bigger group.

Are Gorillas Endangered?

Have you ever questioned yourself how mountain gorillas are endangered? Or how many they are in number in this whole world? Or what is the cause of their being endangered, Was there a moment when they weren’t threatened to extinction? Those that have lived to see the happy hours of these World’s most fascinating primates living in harmony in their territories can tell how life-changing an encounter with gorilla feels.

But could this be true? Maybe this may be your first time to hear about these Gorillas. And that you find no difference between these primates, then I will refer you to my previous posts before embarking on this great journey of determining whether Gorillas are really endangered or not!!

I have seen a number of people eager to Trek Gorillas in the Wild most especially in the Virunga’s Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda which is the World leading Mountain Gorillas Tracking area because of the easy accessibility of Gorilla here, some have gone for their gorilla safaris in Uganda to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Mountain Gorillas in this park are considered to be different from other Mountain Gorillas by the primatologist and hence require naming as a different sub-species of Eastern Gorillas. Whilst others go to Mgahinga National Park these last two are located in Southern Uganda. For the feel of it, some clients prefer tracking all these Gorillas in these countries. This is what we may call appreciating Nature.

But the fact is people come with no or little knowledge about these Gorillas or which type of Gorillas they are going to track. The gorillas found in Rwanda, Uganda, and D.R.Congo are Mountain Gorillas and they have a great variation from other subspecies of Gorillas. For more on this please check out Gorillas Species in the World

In short there are two Gorillas species that roam the planet earth, if am to say (they may be roaming the world, found in The Zoo but their original homeland is Africa) and that is the Western Gorillas and the Easter Gorillas each species subdivided into two with Eastern Gorillas making the Mountain Gorillas that are entirely found in Africa and in the Wild with none in the zoo. The other subspecies of Eastern Gorillas is the Eastern lowland Gorillas mainly found in Congo, It is some times referred to as the Grauer’s Gorillas; they are the most critically endangered Gorillas in the World according to the 2012-1014 Most Crucially primates in The World. Where as the Western Gorilla Species is divided into the Cross River Gorilla and the Western-lowland Gorillas.

So what is the greatest threat of Gorillas in the Wild? Gorillas face a number of threats, poaching is one of these threats, were as people fight to protect these primates for generations and doing all that they can to allow people see and appreciate these primates while in their natural habitats others strive to show that they are able-bodied by hunting gorillas and eating them. You may be alarmed at this! At this but I was also on when I had of it too. But for what? Why would they do such a cruel act as this? You may be asking yourself, Cruel or rude we may call it but to these this was culture. All this was or still is found in Cameroon where it is chiefs who are coming to power are made to eat the Brains of a hunted Gorillas whereas the Old chief will eat its heart.

Gorillas have unaccounted a threat with diseases since they are closely related to humans they have been able to contract the same diseases as in humans that is why it is not advisable to extend near a gorillas more than 5 meters from it this is partly for your safety from the Dominate Silverback who will want to protect his members form the intruder of spreading disease from either the gorilla to you or from you to the Gorilla.

The increase in Human population has greatly exerted great pressure to the habitats of these Apes, which as lead them to look for food in people’s gardens after the destruction of their reliable source of food and in turn, people have picked up arms to fight them. This can be clearly seen in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where people have cleared the Forest where these Mountain Gorillas find their safety to give way for agricultural activities and settlements.

All the above and many more threats like taking them to the zoos where they face drastic diet change that may lead to their death (for example a certain zoo in Asia had wanted to buy some Mountain gorillas from Uganda for their zoo) has triggered

The need to protect these Gorillas for generations while in the wild because this is the best place for them even though records show that the life span of them being in the wild is lower than when they are in captivity, this does not qualify them to live as prisoners in the zoo. Because here they do not behave as gorillas should.

So what would be the best way to protect these gorillas in the wild? To me the conservation organization having garzetted their habitat it should sensitize the once rivals and predators of these Apes to become great friends and respect each other at all cost for the generation to come.

Hiking Rwenzori Mountains

Explore the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon

The Rwenzori Mountains in Western Uganda commonly referred to as the mountains of the moon form one of the most beautiful and breathtaking sceneries in East Africa.  Located in the far west along the border with Democratic Republic of Congo, The highlands sit in a tourist-rich region surrounded by stunning attractions that include Uganda’s largest wildlife reserve of Queen Elizabeth national park, Semuliki national park and the Rift valley Lakes including Albert, Edward and Kyoga.  A Uganda hiking safari can lead you to Rwenzori’s glacier peaks up to its permanently snow capped peak of Margherita. The glaciers from the top of the mountain are believed to be source of the world’s longest River, the Nile.

The mountains cover a vast range of about 120km long and 65km wide. Rwenzori Mountains is a host of six massifs that are separated by deep valleys. These glacial massifs include Mount Stanley, the highest with 5,109m, Mount Speke (4,890m), Mount Baker (4,843m), Mount Emin (4,798m) and Luigi da Savoia (4,627m).  The Mountains are characterized by five overlapping vegetation zones with the lower part covered by the evergreen forest zone occupying the altitude up to 28,000m. Bamboo forests occupy the bamboo zone (2,800m to 3,000m, the heather zone follows upward (3,000m to 3,800m) followed by the alpine zone (3,500 to 4,500m) and the nival zone forms the last vegetation zone (4,400m to 5,000m).

You go through stunning and varied landscapes as you trek to the top of Africa’s third highest mountain on a crowd-free hiking that distinguishes Rwenzori from other hiking mountains of Africa like Kilimanjaro.

Ruwenzori’s sharp increase in altitude makes the ascent steep and it may require trekkers to have a stamina-based training in order to make it to its summits though no you don’t necessarily need to posses technical climbing skills to hike here.

There are campsites with static tents with comfortable mattresses where you can take a rest after 7-8 hours of trekking each day. While at the campsites, your day can start with porridge and end with a local dish of hearty pasta or a rolex made of fried eggs rolled inside a chapatti. Fall in love with nature as you shower the ice-cold waters under the glacial-fed waterfall at Mutinda Camp on your day two camping.

Besides Mount Rwenzori, Uganda is blessed with several other mountains scattered in different parts of the World.  Hiking travelers to Uganda can also Mt Elgon is eastern Uganda, Mt Muhabura, Mt Gahinga  and Mt Sabyinyo in south western Uganda.

A five-day trek is likely to get you at around 4,450 meters where you start sighting the multi-peaked massif of Mount Stanley shrouded in clouds with shining glaciers.

There is no need to worry as you hike to the top of Rwenzori because the records indicate that 90% of the climbers make it to the summit.

All transactions are done through Rwanda Tourism Store for booking flights, hotels and travel experiences and a destination pavilion where Chinese consumers can learn more Rwanda and her tourism products.  H.E Paul Kagame for Rwanda and Jack Ma the founder of and Chief Executive Officer for the Alibaba group of companies signed the agreement between Rwanda and China respectively.  With do doubt, Chinese’s direct access of Rwanda tourism products will increase the country’s tourism traffic from China.   According to the chairman of Rwanda Chamber of tourism, the Electronic World trade platform is a good deal for Rwanda, which will help the country to efficiently penetrate into Chinese market. Chinese travelers can now book Rwanda gorilla tours, chimpanzee trekking, kigali city tours and other wildlife experiences in Rwanda online

Also, the marketing of Rwanda tourism products on China’ Fliggy will cut off all the trade intermediaries, reducing commissions and saving Rwanda from the initial expenses. Direct trade will help Rwanda Development Board to earn more profits with reduced expenditures.  To maximize trade benefits, Rwanda Development Board urged all tourism businesses in Rwanda to embrace and make use of this online platform. Rwanda travel operators are also advised to package their products in a more unique and innovative way maintaining the standards of Rwanda as an attractive and competitive tourism destination, which offer exceptional travel experiences at affordable prices.  The major objective of electronic world trade platform is to support the development of the digital economy in Rwanda by making it easier for Rwandan companies to participate in global trade.

Chimpanzee Tours

Top Places To Trek Chimpanzees

Chimpanzee trekking ranks second after gorilla trekking tours in east and central Africa. The enticing stories about memorable chimpanzee encounters have encouraged more travelers from near and distant regions to meet face to face with critically endangered species. Chimpanzees share roughly 98% of human genes and hence posses most human-like characters that make them exceptional creatures with visiting. Just like gorillas, chimpanzees were once at the verge of extinction and are therefore listed in the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Just like in mountain gorillas, chimpanzee trekking involves several hours to hiking up and down through the jungle before meeting chimpanzees. Lucky travelers hear chimpanzees screaming in the jungle off and on which make it easy to trace them. Much as there are many chimpanzee destinations, we bring you the top chimpanzee destinations that reward you with memorable chimpanzee encounters. These include among others:

Kibale forest national park

Rwanda Clarifies Gorilla Permit Pricing

Rwanda Clarifies Gorilla Permit Pricing
A lot has been said regarding Rwanda’s gorilla permit pricing since May 2017. Rwanda Development Board with immediate effect doubled the price of gorilla permits in volcanoes national park from $750 to $1500 to be paid by all travelers including Rwanda nationals. In addition Rwanda introduced a 30% discount for people who would in addition to gorilla trekking spend extra three nights in either Akagera or Nyungwe forest national park. Also, a special package (15%) for conference tourists who would spend more days in Rwanda after and before their conferences/meetings was introduced for conference travelers.
Rwanda gorilla pricing
With no doubt, the abrupt changes in Rwanda left many people confused, wondering what is what and what applies where. In other words, the information was not clear to the affected people especially traveling agents who would need to give such information to the potential travelers. Undeniably, Rwanda tourism industry has been shaken by these changes. It’s so clear that a high number of the would have been Rwanda travelers have ended up in Uganda. This is evidenced by an increase in Rwanda Uganda gorilla safaris where travelers land at Kigali international airport and immediately cross over to Uganda where gorilla trekking is cheap. Rwanda lost a lot of gorilla tours to Uganda, which almost forced many people in business. On most occasions, most people have tried to understand who is eligible to enjoy this 30% discount but have failed. Some people claimed that Rwanda put 30% discount as an indirect way to recover from the tourism loss it has suffered since the increase of gorilla permit costs. Sincerely, it has not been clear what is what regarding gorilla tour pricing in Rwanda which has raised a lot of questions among travel operators and travelers themselves.

Finally, Rwanda Development Board has come out to give people a clear state of tourism in Rwanda and reason for the 30% discount. Rwanda’s defense is against a wrong report by the Associated Press (AS), which pointed out that 30% in Rwanda during the low season aimed at attracting back tourists, which Rwanda has lost to Uganda. Also, the Associated Press wrongfully reported that RDB put discounted permits in trying to recover the loss following the drop in tourist numbers.

RDB strongly defends that Rwanda has never lost clients even after doubling the increase of gorilla permit prices. According to Rwanda Development Board, the change in the cost of gorilla permits in Volcanoes National park intend to attract more visitors to Rwanda’s other parks of Nyungwe forest and Akagera national parks and encourage them to stay for three days in the low season. Between the months of November to May. Travelers who visit any of Nyungwe or Akagera are entitled to 30% discount while conference travelers who also trek mountains are entitled to 15% discount. Therefore, Rwanda development board clarifies that the introduction of discounted gorilla permits is one of the strategy to promote tourism in Rwanda’s other national parks besides Volcanoes National Park and not a reaction to the reduced numbers in gorilla tours.

Reaction to the loss of business report
In reaction to the Associated press’s report of how Rwanda has lost all the business o Uganda which has left most guides and travel operators in Rwanda without income, RDB clarifies that the country has NEVER lost any business to any country. “Tourism in Rwanda has steadily increased from time to time irrespective of change in prices and we hope it all increase even much more in future” Says RDB executive. Furthermore, Rwanda Development Board explains that since the increase of gorilla permit prices, the country has seen an increase in demand for gorilla tours compared to the past. Rwanda tourism statistics indicate that Rwanda has earned $983,333 revenue between the months of May-August 2018, which is roughly 4% increase in government revenue. However, just like in other gorilla destinations, Rwanda faced a drop in tourist numbers during the low season, which it recovered in the high season. The steady increase in gorilla tourism demand give Rwanda confidence that the trend will continue to shoot high in future.

Sustainable conservation initiatives

The other major reason behind Rwanda’s high gorilla permit prices is to support sustainable conservation initiatives in Volcanoes National park. In other words, the initiative is to enhance visitors experience while at the same time improving the livelihood of locale people living adjacent to the national park. Local people are assured of ready market for their local products especially crafts and agricultural products at good prices. Also, revenue sharing is one of the initiatives, which allocate 15% of the total money revenue from the sale of gorilla permits to local communities adjacent to the national park. Through this initiative, local people have gained a lot of benefits, which include clean drinking water, health centers, schools, houses and water tanks that have all improved their standards of living.
