Rwanda’s annual gorilla naming ceremony, commonly known as “Kwita Izina” in the local language has been once again celebrated for this year. This year’s event took place at Musanze, in the Northwest of the country near Volcanoes National Park where Rwanda’s mountain gorillas reside.

Kwita Izina is a gorilla-naming ceremony where newborn gorillas in the previous year are given names and the country has made it an annual event with several guests invited from across the globe to take part in it.

The Rwanda Development Board which is in charge of the country’s tourism sector underline that the ceremony is aimed at conserving the gorilla population in Volcanoes National Park and also to help monitor the individual gorillas and the groups to which they belong.

Several prominent personalities and public figures both local and international especially those who are interested in gorilla conservation have always attended the event.

In addition to celebrating Kwita Izina, several other tourism-related activities take place during the week in the buildup to the ceremony.

In the buildup to the grand Kwita Izina ceremony, Rwanda Development Board this time organized a 9-days special tour package which included game drives in Akagera National Park. Other tours on the package would even continue after the ceremony for another 2 days.

The Kwita Izina ceremony was launched in 2005 with the purpose of not only naming the newly born mountain gorillas but also to raise awareness of the importance of protecting gorillas and their habitat at both local and international levels.

What is involved in the Kwita Izina tour package?

Arrival and Kigali City Tour

High demand for permits to trek chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National park has called for an increase of chimpanzee permit prices by $50 each. Africa Adventure Safaris notifies all her potential travelers that with effect from 1st July 2020, each permit to trek chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National park will cost $200. Kibale Forest National park is a primate capital and a first stop Centre for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. The tropical rainforest is home to the highest population of chimpanzees along with other 12 primates. 2 shifts of chimpanzee trekking (morning at 8:00 am and afternoon at 2:00 pm) are arranged to give a high population of visitors chance to trek the endangered chimpanzees. Uganda Wildlife Authority increased gorilla permit prices from $ 600 to $700 starting with 1st July 2020.

Reasons for the increase of chimpanzee permit costs?
Well, the major reason behind the increase of chimpanzee permit costs in Kibale forest national park is to promote the conservation of endangered chimpanzees for sustainable tourism. Chimpanzees are listed among the endangered species which if not handled with care can get extinct denying the future generation a chance to meet their lost cousins.
Also, the cost of the increase of chimpanzee permits in Kibale Forest is to limit the number of travelers visiting these apes. Chimpanzees share 99.9% of human genes hence our closest relatives are susceptible to human diseases. Tourist crowds in Kibale forest park disrupt the peace of chimpanzees and some of their social behaviors such as mating among others.

The great migration is associated with births and deaths of the animals with about 250,000 wildebeest dying due to predation, hunger, and thirst while on the journey.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Golden monkeys are only found in two isolated habitats in the world: The Virunga Mountains that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo and in Gishwati forest in Rwanda.

Where do gorillas live?
