How To Trek Uganda Gorillas On A Budget

How To Trek Uganda Gorillas On A Budget

Even after increasing the cost of Uganda gorilla permits, travelers can still visit gorillas in Bwindi Forest and Mgahinga gorilla national parks on budget. YES, you still have a chance to trek Uganda gorillas at a very low cost despite the recent hike. With effect from 1st July 2010, Uganda gorilla permit costs are set to rise from $600 to $700. The increase of Uganda gorilla permits comes 2 years after Rwanda doubled her gorilla permit from $750 to $1500 since May 2017. After various proposals to increase the cost of a Uganda gorilla permit, Uganda Wildlife Authority and the entire Uganda tourism fraternity reacted by adding $100 to the cost of a gorilla permit making it $700. However, Uganda gorilla tours are still affordable, especially for budget travelers. Africa Adventure Safaris guides you on how you can trek gorillas in Uganda on budget.

Book and pay for the permit before July 2020

Gorilla permit in Uganda

Book your permit early

Endeavor to book and pay for the permit before July 2020. At present, Uganda gorilla permits still cost $600 for foreign non-residents, $500 for foreign nonresidents and 250,000shs for East African residents. Do not be confused or cheated, all permits booked and confirmed before 1st July 2020 cost $600. Contact Africa Adventure Safaris today, tell us your desired trekking date and month and we shall reserve for you a permit at $600 saving you the extra $100.

Visit gorillas in a low season
Despite the uniform gorilla permit costs throughout the year, trekking gorillas in a low season between the months of September, October November, March, April and May is quite cheap. During this time, hotels, lodges and other service providers tend to cut prices to encourage more visits. The season is associated with heavy rains, which limit the number of travelers coming to see gorillas. If you are traveling on a budget, therefore, book your gorilla trip in the low season and grab the chance of low-cost accommodation and transport services.

Stay in budget lodges/hotels

Travel with your mates
Group tours are cheap and affordable for a budget traveler compared to private tours. In a group tour, travelers share costs for rooms, transport and also get discounts from service providers which is not a case with a private solo trip. Contact your mates, travel with them and pay less.

Why do gorillas fight

Why Do Silverback Gorillas Fight?

Yes, fighting for his family is one of the key roles of a silverback gorilla. A silverback gorilla is a dominant adult male gorilla, the dad, overseer and protector of the entire gorilla family comprised of females and baby gorillas. A close encounter with a silverback is undeniably a dream come true for most if not all travelers visiting trek gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The silver hair at the back distinguishes a silverback gorilla from other adult gorillas in a family. a silverback gorilla head a gorilla family comprised of between 8 to 30 members comprised of babies, juveniles and females. He has the right to mate with all adult females in a gorilla family with no restriction. Whenever a silverback gorilla senses any form of insecurity, he charges by beating the chest and making loud hoots to scare away strangers. When it’s about protecting his family, a silverback gorilla can fight to the death. Most silverbacks have died in fights to protect their families. Among the reasons why the silverback gorillas fight includes:

To protect their families
The common reason why silverback gorillas fight is to protect their families from strangers including poachers and lone silverbacks who want to start up families. If the silverback does not fight, his entire family can be taken away leading to the collapse of his family.

Break off
In other instances, a silverback fights when he wants to break off from his father’s family. There cannot be two adult male gorillas in one family but they must fight and whoever wins takes over. The defeated silverback leaves the group to start his own by grabbing adult females and babies from different other groups. It starts by being a loner and thereafter begins to grab adult females and babies from other groups to make his own family.

Fighting for females

Bitter gorillas fight

Females are such a treasure in all kinds of life that even silverback gorillas fight to win them. One silverback has a right to own all adult females in the family and hence cannot allow any male gorilla to come close to females. Any attempt by a different silverback to come closer to females will automatically erupt into a fight. A dominant silverback mate will all adult females hence he is the father of all baby gorillas in the family. Just like in a human home, there can’t be two fathers in one home.

Kwita Izina 2019: Rwanda’s gorilla-naming ceremony

Rwanda’s annual gorilla naming ceremony, commonly known as “Kwita Izina” in the local language has been once again celebrated for this year. This year’s event took place at Musanze, in the Northwest of the country near Volcanoes National Park where Rwanda’s mountain gorillas reside.

Kwita Izina is a gorilla-naming ceremony where newborn gorillas in the previous year are given names and the country has made it an annual event with several guests invited from across the globe to take part in it.

The Rwanda Development Board which is in charge of the country’s tourism sector underline that the ceremony is aimed at conserving the gorilla population in Volcanoes National Park and also to help monitor the individual gorillas and the groups to which they belong.

Several prominent personalities and public figures both local and international especially those who are interested in gorilla conservation have always attended the event.

In addition to celebrating Kwita Izina, several other tourism-related activities take place during the week in the buildup to the ceremony.

In the buildup to the grand Kwita Izina ceremony, Rwanda Development Board this time organized a 9-days special tour package which included game drives in Akagera National Park. Other tours on the package would even continue after the ceremony for another 2 days.

The Kwita Izina ceremony was launched in 2005 with the purpose of not only naming the newly born mountain gorillas but also to raise awareness of the importance of protecting gorillas and their habitat at both local and international levels.

What is involved in the Kwita Izina tour package?

Arrival and Kigali City Tour

Be picked up from Kigali International Airport upon your arrival and transferred directly into the heart of Kigali for several city tour activities. Among the prominent places, you can visit include the genocide memorial sites, local markets, and crafts centers.

Accommodation is arranged according to your budget with both high-end and midrange options available and you will be transferred back to your lodge or hotel for dinner and resting at the end of every day’s tour.

Game drives/game viewing in Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park in the East is Rwanda’s largest savanna park with a variety of wildlife including lion, leopard, buffalo, and elephant, among others. You enjoy viewing all these on an incredible game drive through the park upon arrival. Later after lunch, you enjoy a boat ride on Lake Ihema located in the park where you can get a chance to see the large resident crocodiles and view amazing birds like the Fish at the Bird Island.

Nyungwe Canopy Walk

The Canopy walk in Nyungwe Forest National Park in the Southwest of Rwanda is one of the major highlights in this tour package. There are three spanning bridges of the canopy each standing high at over 50 meters and a length of over 160 meters. Enjoy spectacular bird views while on the canopy walkway and an aerial view of the magnificent tropical rainforest of Nyungwe.

As you drive to Nyungwe, you will enjoy unbelievable scenes like the cultural heritage centers of Rwanda with a stopover at the King Royal Palace Museum.

Chimpanzee Trekking

In the evening you will be taken for relaxation at Karongi where you can enjoy beautiful lakeside views before being transferred back to your hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

Kwita Izina Ceremony

The ceremony marks the climax of this tour package. All guests assemble at Kinigi, the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park where the ceremony is held each year. In addition to naming the newborn gorillas, the event also showcases a number of programs including performances from cultural, local and international artists to entertain the guests. A few communications from key public figures including President Paul Kagame who always attends the event are also observed.

Later in the evening, the ceremony is concluded by a short community visit at the Red Rocks Community Camp where you will see and try your hand at exciting local activities like basket weaving, beer brewing, music, food preparation, and tasting.

How to choose a group tour

Tips For Planning a Group Trip

Traveling as a group of mates is the best experience you can ever get. It’s full of laughs, pranks, learning and great lively stories. Traveling as a group is one way of creating a strong bond with friends with whom you share traveling and life experiences making it all fun and enjoyable. Those who have been on a group trip before can confirm that the experience is once in a lifetime. A group trip comes along with lots of benefits including shared costs. However, planning a group trip can be tiring and strenuous especially when a group has many people. Africa Adventure Safaris offers you a guide to choosing a group trip with no difficulty. Among the tips to consider when choosing a group tour include:

Get a group leader
If you are traveling as mates, make sure you choose one of you to lead the group. A group leader is responsible for contacting and dealing with a tour operator in booking safari activities, gorilla permits in case you want to trek mountain gorillas and booking hotel/ lodge rooms. Choosing a leader saves the group hustles associated with bookings and reservations. A group leader should be somewhat experienced in planning with communication skills to deal with travel agents If the group is large, you can choose more than one leader to run the activities and booking processes. You can choose one leader for accommodations, the second for transport and another one responsible for booking tourist activities. However, all group members must first discuss and agree before a leader does any booking. As a group, you are advised to look among yourselves and choose someone who loves planning and appoint him/her as your leader. Just share your ideas with a group leader so he can make your bookings simple and less tiring.

Travel activities
Make sure you join a group with your desired activities. In other words, joining a group with tour activities contrary to what you wish may ruin your entire trip. The whole group should sit down, discuss and agree on which activities to do and which attractions to visit. Also, booking similar activities may earn you certain discounts on some activities. Agreeing on what activities to do in time enhances timely booking hence avoiding disappointments associated with last-minute bookings. In case one of your desired travel activities is left out, you can carry extra money and do it privately during your free time. Doing similar activities as a group is fun, like gorilla trekking where you trek one gorilla family in any of the gorilla destinations.

Consider the size of the group
Yes, group tours are interesting and enjoyable but at a moderate size. Very large groups make planning difficult and agreement on what activities to do at what time very hard. Therefore endeavor to choose a medium-sized group to avoid confusion that comes along with very many people. If a group becomes too big, you can split it and travel at different times to ensure the comfort of each group member.

Consider age
A group tour of peers is definitely enjoyable and fun. Avoid joining a group of people who are not of your age. If you are interested in adventure activities like white water rafting, hiking and mountain gorilla trekking then join a group of young people who have similar ambitions.

Have a meeting place
As a group, choose a universal place to always meet and discuss your trip. The chosen place should be accessible to all group members in the shortest time possible with no difficulty. The group leader will always inform you when to meet and the agenda of the scheduled meetings. Make sure you keep communicating with other group members to keep updated.

Generally, group tours are fun and exciting if well arranged and planned. Join a group tour today, travel with your mates, share travel experiences and enjoy this once in a lifetime experience with Africa Adventure Safaris.

Kibale Forest National park

Kibale Chimpanzee Permit Prices increased to $200

Africa Adventure Safaris notifies all her potential travelers that with effect from 1st July 2020, each permit to trek chimpanzees in Kibale Forest National park will cost $200. Kibale Forest National park is a primate capital and a first stop Centre for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. Uganda Wildlife Authority increased gorilla permit prices from $ 600 to $700 starting with 1st July 2020.

Uganda chimpanzee tours

Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest

Reasons for the increase of chimpanzee permit costs?
Well, the major reason behind the increase of chimpanzee permit costs in Kibale forest national park is to promote the conservation of endangered chimpanzees for sustainable tourism. Chimpanzees are listed among the endangered species which if not handled with care can get extinct denying the future generation a chance to meet their lost cousins.
Also, the cost of the increase of chimpanzee permits in Kibale Forest is to limit the number of travelers visiting these apes. Chimpanzees share 99.9% of human genes hence our closest relatives are susceptible to human diseases. Tourist crowds in Kibale forest park disrupt the peace of chimpanzees and some of their social behaviors such as mating among others.
More still, increased chimpanzee permit costs is meant to support the livelihoods of local communities adjacent to Kibale Forest National park. Some percentage of the money collected from the sale of chimpanzee permits is given back to local people to improve their standards of living.

What about the already booked permits
All permits booked before 1st July 2020 cost $150 each. Even those beyond 2020 but were booked before the announcement of the new prices will cost the initial price ($150). Uganda wildlife Authority will check out its system to confirm before giving you permits at $150 with no difficulty.

How to book chimpanzee permits in Kibale Forest National park
Do you want to book and reserve a chimpanzee permit to Kibale Forest? Africa Adventure safaris are at your service. AAS does all the reservations with Uganda Wildlife Authority saving you all the hustles of dealing with UWA direct. Why East Africa is the tourism gem of Africa

Four of the seven natural wonders of Africa are found within east Africa. These include River Nile, the longest river in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti migration and the Ngorongoro Crater.

In addition to those wonders, East Africa is also the destination for some of the best wildlife experiences in the world including gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, birding safaris/bird viewing, and incredible game drive safaris.

East Africa is also the only region in the world where you can see wildlife wonders like the tree-climbing lions found in Uganda’s Queen Elizabeth National Park and Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park.

This explains why the region stands out as the tourism gem of the African continent and this is evidenced by the huge numbers of travelers who visit the region each year.

River Nile

The longest river in the world has its source in east Africa. Discovered by British explorer John Speke, who established that river Nile has got its source in Lake Victoria at Jinja in Uganda before it flows northwards through South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt and empties its waters into the Mediterranean Sea.

Travelers can enjoy several excursions in the Nile waters including white-water rafting at Bujagali Falls in Jinja, top of waterfalls at Murchison falls national park where the Nile passes and cruising in the boat along the course of the river in the same park.

River Nile is such a significant resource in all the country where it passes offering a range of advantages including hydropower production, irrigation purposes, and it also serves as the main source water for both domestic and industrial purposes in Sudan and Egypt.

Gorilla Trekking

Mountain gorillas are endangered primates found in two regions; the Virunga Mountains of DR Congo, Uganda and Rwanda and in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda.

Gorilla trekking has been described as the best wildlife experience in the world by many travelers that have embarked on this encounter before.

The experience of meeting mountain gorillas in the wild is indescribable, so breathtaking and you will definitely become emotional and you fall in love with them as you watch a group of these amazing primates play, feed, converse and rest.

Mountain gorillas are the largest living primates and they share up to 98% of the human DNA something that makes their behavior so similar to those of humans.

You can trek mountain gorillas through a gorilla safari that you can arrange through one of the trusted local tour operators like Africa Adventure Safari.

The cost of trekking mountain gorillas varies among the three countries with Rwanda the most expensive selling their gorilla permit at $1,500 per person, Uganda sells it at $600 while DR Congo is the cheapest at $450 though insecurity cases have scared away potential visitors.

For a successful gorilla safari, you may need to book your trip in advance given the limited availability of the gorilla permits due to high demand and strict conservation regulations.

An advance period of 6 months to 1 year is recommended, this will allow your local tour agent to arrange everything concerning your trip including buying your gorilla permit, booking your accommodation and planning for your transportation.

The Serengeti Migration

This another wildlife wonder exclusively found in east Africa. The Serengeti ecosystem which extends from northern Tanzania to southwestern Kenya hosts the world’s largest terrestrial mammal migration.

There are several game reserves in this ecosystem together with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania while the Kenyan part hosts the Maasai Mara National Park.

The Serengeti is made up of varied landscape with grasslands, woodlands, riverine forests, and swamps.

In addition to the Serengeti’s great wildebeest migration that takes place each year, the area also hosts a variety of wildlife including over 70 species of large mammals and over 500 bird species. Lions are numerous in Serengeti and are commonly seen during game drives in this vast park.

The great migration in the Serengeti happens each year featuring the movement of great wildebeest.

The migration usually begins between January and March in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, part of the Serengeti in Southern Tanzania. Here, about 1.7 million wildebeest, 260,000 zebras, 470,000 gazelles together with other wild game species begin moving.

During the movement around February, the animals give birth to about 500,000 calves as they graze in the plains of the southern section of Serengeti.

As the rain season stops in May, the animals continue moving northwest before they stop in the region around River Grumeti until late June and they finally arrive and stay in Kenya by either late July or August.

The great migration is associated with births and deaths of the animals with about 250,000 wildebeest dying due to predation, hunger, and thirst while on the journey.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano and the largest and highest Mountain in Africa found in Tanzania east Africa. From its base, the mountain rises about 16,000 feet (4,900 m) to an altitude of 19,341 feet (5,895 m) above sea level.

Kilimanjaro is a popular climbing destination to mountain hikers and is the major feature of the Kilimanjaro National Park. The mountain has got three distinct cones including Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.

The top of Kilimanjaro can be reached via the official trekking routes that have been marked with the Machame route regarded as the most scenic one.

The government of Tanzania through the ministry of tourism set up guidelines to help hikers trek to the top of Kilimanjaro safely in order to avoid deaths that had become very common during hiking.

Game Viewing

Though this wildlife encounter is also found in very many other parts of the world, east Africa is also very rich in game safaris.

In addition to vast national parks and game reserves like the already mentioned Serengeti, there are several other savanna parks in the region where travelers enjoy incredible game drives.

Some of the most eye-catching east African parks with breathtaking wildlife encounters include Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park, Kidepo Valley National Park, and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

A wildlife safari to these parks will enable you to meet all the African “big five” featuring lion, buffalo, leopard, elephant, and rhinoceros. Other common game in these parks include several antelope species, zebra, warthogs, giraffe, hyena, among others.

It is in Queen Elizabeth National Park in western Uganda where you will find the amazing tree-climbing lions chilling high up in trees as they spot their prey grazing in the nearby plains.

In addition to game drives, travelers have got many other safari activities to enjoy while on their visit in these parks including chimpanzee tracking, birding, boat cruise, rafting, and community visits.

Cultural Tours

East Africa is one of the regions with the most thrilling cultural tours in the world. You will enjoy visiting some of the most unique tribes in the world with unique cultures,

The most exciting cultural tours in east Africa include visiting some of the unique tribes like the Karamajong of Northeastern Uganda who share almost the same cultures with their neighbors across the border in Kenya, the Maasai. The IK is also another rare tribe near the Karamojong occupying the steep slopes of Mount Murongole in Kidepo Valley National Park.

Alternatively, you can visit the Pygmies who live in DR Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda where they are known as the Batwa.

The good news is that when it comes to cultural tours in east Africa, you also kill two birds with one stone as these encounters are always packaged together with the main safaris in the national parks depending on your preferences.

The Batwa are always visited as part of the gorilla trekking safari in either Uganda or Rwanda while you can visit the Karamojong as part of your game drive safari in Kidepo Valley National Park.

Nevertheless, east Africa has got many more incredible encounters in addition to the above list that will reward you with a lifetime experience once you visit them. These include birding safaris, chimpanzee tracking, cultural and historical tours, nature walks, beach safaris, among others.

Trekking golden monkeys in mountain gorilla habitat

Golden monkeys are only found in two isolated habitats in the world: The Virunga Mountains that straddle the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo and in Gishwati forest in Rwanda.

In Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, one of the 3 parks in Virunga Mountains with mountain gorillas, golden monkey is the only other primate living in the same habitat with the gorillas.

Unlike mountain gorillas that live in medium family groups, golden monkeys live in very large groups that often occupy the trees high up in the branches.

There are exclusive golden monkey tracking safaris in Volcanoes National Park where trekkers can meet these colored-looking primates in the forest. Treks to see golden monkeys depart from Kinigi headquarters once each day.

The cost of trekking golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park is $100 per person and trekkers are allowed to spend up to one hour in the presence of these beautiful and colored primates.

While in the presence of golden monkeys, trekkers can take photographs and videos of these amazing primates as they linger from tree to tree playing and feeding while taking a few minutes to look curiously at their visitors.

Golden monkeys are a critical part of this gorilla habitat as well as the general biodiversity of the forest. Besides, just like gorillas, they are also endangered species whose population is believed to be declining.

For a habitat, golden monkeys don’t build nests like mountain gorillas but rather sleep in trees as they live in their multi-male and multi-female groups.

There are two golden monkey groups in Volcanoes National Park that can be tracked including one found on the slopes of Mount Karisimbi and the other in the bamboo forest of Mount Sabyinyo.

Like mountain gorillas, bamboo shoots and leaves are the key food for the golden monkeys though they feed on several forest fruits.

Despite being similar with the blue monkey overall, the major distinguishing factor of the two species is the possession of a golden-orange patch on the upper flanks and the backs of the golden monkey.

Some of the most common behaviors of golden monkeys include traveling in various group sizes that may range from 3 up to large groups of about 60 individuals.

Those who occupy higher elevation tend to live in smaller groups. There is always a common sleeping place that the golden monkeys return to after feeding.

When it comes to sleeping, golden monkeys usually sleep in small subgroups of four in the branches of bamboo plants. They prefer to use a dense bamboo plant that weave together to make a good stronghold for sleeping.

Habitats with abundant fruit and bamboo have attracted a lot of golden monkeys in the area given their diet.

Golden monkeys are also fond of switching in between areas due to seasonal changes. They will always remain in an area with ripe fruits while they will move to a new area where bamboo is shooting at the beginning of the rain season. Preferably, golden monkeys like staying frequently in an area with mixed bamboo and fruit.

Click here to book your golden monkey tracking safari or to make any inquiries about a safari of your choice in Rwanda or Uganda.

Porters and hiring stick for gorilla trekking

Walking stick & porter – Must have’s for gorilla trekking

We have often talked about gorilla trekking packing list, what to wear and how to prepare for a successful gorilla trek experience. However, there are two essentials that every traveler MUST HAVE for exceptional gorilla encounters. They sound simple, but YES, without these, your gorilla trekking safari may be a ruin. Some clients look at them as optional but honestly; a walking stick and a porter are the two essentials that you must not leave behind on your gorilla trek. Whether it’s in Bwindi impenetrable forest, Mgahinga gorilla, Volcanoes or even Virunga national parks, endeavor to hire the duo if you want you to want to have a memorable experience. The following are the reasons why you should hire a porter and a walking stick for your gorilla trekking safari to Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.

Why hire a porter for your gorilla trek?

Hiring a porter relieves your gorilla trekking session. A porter helps you carry the bags hence freeing you to concentrate on the endangered gorillas and walk freely with no difficulty.

Porters in Bwindi forest

Porters support clients in Bwindi Forest

Also, porters support you by holding your hand through the riskier parts of the forest. Forest grounds can at times get so muddy and slippery making it hard to pass through for someone not used to forest life. In the same way, porters help you pick anything from your bag at any time you want. Whether it’s a camera, drinking water or any snack, porter gets it for you. Hiring a porter is an indirect way of supporting local livelihoods. A porter is hired at only $20 for a full day and its surely worth the service. Pottering is a source of income for school fees, buy food, support their families and improve local people’s standards of living. Fortunately, Porters have been in these jungles and will help you walk through it. Even if the bag may not feel heavy at the start of the hike, it may turn out to be the heaviest after 5 hours of hiking up and down in search of the gorillas.

Why hire a walking stick for gorilla trekking

Why hire a walking stick

Walking Sticks for Gorilla Trekking

A walking stick eases your movements and makes you steady throughout the trek. In other words, a walking stick gives you balance through the slippery muddy forest grounds. Also, some areas of the jungle can get so steep, a walking stick gives you support. You can get a walking stick at the park headquarters at a small cost or ask for it from your gorilla lodge. Also, buying/hiring a walking stick supports local people who make them helping them to earn a living.
